Introduction. Hearing loss is one of the most common defects affecting human senses. Causes of hearing loss are complex and they constitute a combination of environmental and genetic factors. The frequency of incidence of hearing damage increases with age. Aim. Assessment of patients’ knowledge on the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing about causes of hearing loss. Material and methods. A total of 100 patients of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing. Group 1 comprised 67 persons with hearing problems, group 2 comprised 33 persons with no hearing problems. Participation in the survey was voluntary, the questionnaire was anonymous and developed by the authors, it comprised 21 close-ended questions. Statistical analysis: STATISTICA 10.0 program (licensed to Warsaw Medical University). Results. The patients of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing demonstrated an insufficient level of knowledge of the causes of hearing loss. The study group presented the highest level of knowledge in terms of genetically determined hearing loss (correct answers constituted 72% of the total) and hearing damage caused by influenza (correct answers constituted 75% of the total). Patients’ knowledge of the effect of antineoplastic drugs on the incidence of hearing loss (correct answers constituted 19% of the total) as well as the effect of frequently occurring ear problems on hearing loss (correct answers constituted 22% of the total) was insufficient. Statistical analysis of the results showed that differences between group 1 and group 2 were not statistically significant (p = NS). Conclusions. 1. Among the present group of patients, the level of knowledge of hearing loss was insufficient. 2. Among the study group of patients, the presence of hearing problems did not improve the knowledge in this regard. 3. Educational programmes covering the issues of hearing protection and benefits of the early diagnosis of hearing loss should be introduced in primary schools.
