Introduction. Conversion disorder, otherwise known as dissociative disorders are associated with partial or complete loss of the normal integration between memories of the past, a sense of identity, sensory impressions and control of body movements. One form of conversion disorder may be psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNESs) which are extremely difficult to differentiate with epilepsy. Despite their high prevelence they remain poorely analysed and cause many diagnostic difficulties. Aim. The aim of the paper is to describe the family role and personality traits in the development and onset of conversion disorders. The article presents the definition and characteristics of conversion disorder in the form of PNESs and their understanding in the integrative approach. An illustration of hypotheses concerning the relationship between symptoms and internal conflict, cognitive schemas and family system is a case study of a 21-year old female patient. Material and methods. A case study. Conclusions. Early childhood family relationships and patient personality traits play an important role in the development and course of conversion disorder. Detailed characterization of patient’s personality profile and understanding of the function of conversion symptoms allows us to determine the most optimal form of psychotherapy treatment.
