Introduction and aim. Endoscopic diagnostics is used to examine the interior of a hollow organ or cavity of the body. This involves the risk of infection, caused by improperly decontaminated equipment. The aim of this study was to test the knowledge level of nurses, working in the endoscopy lab, about the risks associated with professional activities, the presentation of the principles of how to protect the microbiological environment of the endoscopic laboratory and its impact on patient’s safety and quality of service rendered. Material and methods. The survey was conducted among 100 nurses working in the endoscopy lab. The method chosen for research was a questionnaire. Results. 85% of respondents said that in the workplace there was a system of risk assessment, 15% did not. In 75% in the endoscopic lab there was infections registration and for 25% there was not. 56% were familiar with techniques of cleaning and disinfecting hands. 32% of respondents were exposed to infection once during work time, 68% were not. 98% of respondents adhere aseptic and antiseptic techniques, 96% use protective gloves. 99% said that the in lab endoscopic equipment after resterilisation was not used, according to 1% it was. Conclusions. The awareness and knowledge level of nurses surveyed on the existence of the phenomenon of occupational risk is satisfactory and shows the full responsibility for the tasks performed. Knowledge of standards, constant education of staff, the amount of personnel and good communication between employees are the most important elements of good and competent care in the diagnostic laboratory. The nurses have appropriate qualifications and special courses. They have the knowledge how to prevent occupational hazards and what to do in case of occupational exposure.
