The aim of this article is to draw attention to the relation between the visual quality of public space in hospitals, the quality of a visual information system and the level of stress of its users (patients, visitors and hospital staff). Some physical aspects of the environment were taken into consideration, including: coloring, texture, lighting, room equipment and organization of space considered both as a room layout and a system carrying information. A reference was made to some cases of visual information systems existing in shopping malls. It was suggested that applying visual codes which are familiar to users (e.g. reminding to some extent of home space), instead of those that are extremely unfamiliar (e.g. abusively modern or stylized) can effect in increasing mental comfort of patients, guests and hospital staff. It was emphasized that not only the visual quality (and character) of public space is vital but also the way in which a user is being informed how to navigate. It was acknowledged that all the above mentioned elements should be taken into consideration in process of designing new hospital buildings but also in all kinds of reconstructions and refurbishments.

Key words: patient’s comfort, quality of space, hospital environment, visual information system, hospital architecture.
