Introduction. Breastfeeding is the healthiest way of providing food to infants and young children. The composition of breast milk perfectly suits the needs of young children, and therefore provides them with the best possible protection. Aim. To assess the level of women’s knowledge about breastfeeding and to determine whether there are independent variables that differentiate its level. Material and methods. The study involved 100 women. The respondents signed written consent to the study. The research tool was a questionnaire constructed by the author. Results. The resulting average level of women’s knowledge about breastfeeding proves to be on the average level (PW = 0,68). The highest average is noticeable in the following aspects: breastfeeding strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child (PW = 0,98), affects the intellectual development of the latter (PW = 0,89), has a beneficial effect on involution of the uterus (PW = 0,81). The confirmed hypothesis related to a statistically significant level of expertise depending on the age and marital status of the women tested. However, both parity and participation in Lamaze classes did not differentiate the level of knowledge about breastfeeding. Conclusions. Women represent an average level of knowledge on breastfeeding. Age and marital status differentiate the level of knowledge in the sample of women. No statistically significant difference in the level of women’s knowledge about breastfeeding based on education, parity and participation in classes in Lamaze occurred.
