Introducion. Using the current specialized scientific literature as a source of reliable scientific information in nursing, significantly contributes to an increase of nurses’ knowledge, inspires to develop scientific career and lifelong learning. Aim. The analysis of nurses’ knowledge and attitudes with respect to evidence-based professional practice (EBP) and using most recent study results in everyday clinical practice depending on their seniority. Material and methods. 389 nurses (19 male); mean length of service 20.24 years (min. 0, max. 40, SD = 9.71); mean age of the studied population 42.51 years (min. 23, max. 69, SD = 9.09). 40,6% had a medical secondary education. 50.1% attained postgraduate courses. Standardized Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire from the University of South Australia, quantitative analysis of research findings. Statistical analysis, non parametric Spearman’s rank correlation: STATISTICA version 12. Results. 42.9% of nurses declared the awareness of the existence, significance and development of EBP in their profession (n = 167, p = 0.92). For 60.1% of new nurses literature and research findings are useful in their day-to-day work (n = 234, p = 0.08) but nearly half of nurses with longer seniority in making right decisions about their professional work, values clinical/field experience more than scientific studies (n = 194, p = 0.01). 42.9% make time to read scientific research (n = 167, p = 0.93) but for 62.2% of more experienced nurses insufficient time (n = 242, p = 0.29) and workload (n = 272, p = 0.03) are one of the greatest barriers to the use of EBP in their clinical practice. Conclusions. 1. In the studied group of nurses the level of knowledge and attitudes with respect to evidence-based practice had no correlation with their length of service. 2. There is a need for continuous updating nurses’ knowledge with respect to the use of the latest scientific research findings in their professional practice.

Key words: evidence based nursing practice, seniority, evidence-based medicine.
