Introduction. Arterial hypertension is the second largest (next to nicotine dependence) risk factor of developing cardiovascular diseases. There are currently 9.5 million Poles affected by cardiovascular diseases and their prevalence among the youth and young adults is rising. Proper nutrition is a fundamental element of hypertension prevention. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess how the students of chosen universities in Warsaw implement healthy eating recommendations and the DASH diet guidelines, in the context of the prevention of arterial hypertension, as well as showing differences in dietary behaviours between the students of different schools. Material and methods. The study was conducted among 146 students (71 of Medical University of Warsaw and 75 of Warsaw University). An original survey questionnaire was employed, containing questions on the regularity of meals, the intervals between meals, the consumed number of servings of products recommended by the DASH diet, the consumption frequency of selected groups of products, the habits regarding additional salt usage and the self-assessment of nutritional habits. Results. The surveyed group of students did not fully adhere to the rules of correct nutrition and the DASH diet guidelines, which was demonstrated in the lack of meal regularity, insufficient consumption of cereals, fruits, vegetables and nuts and the overconsumption of sugar and sweetened beverages. The dietary behaviours of Medical University of Warsaw students did not exhibit a significant positive difference compared to the students of Warsaw University (exceptions: greater regularity of meals, less additional salt usage). Conclusions. It is advisable to undertake action popularizing nutrition information regarding hypertension prophylaxis, as well as motivating students to introduce healthful nutritional behaviours into their daily lives.
