Introduction. A bunion is a struktural deformity of the bone in the big toe which makes it tilt inwards towards other toes. This physical deformity is often painful and is accompanied by swelling and inflammation thus forcing the affected person to reach a decision to undergo an operation. [7] The aim of the study. The aim of dissertation was to assess if sick had sufficient knowledge of bunions, non-operative methods of treating the disease and some other related factors such as how wearing ill-fitting footwear or long standing position at work can deteriorate it. The patients were also questioned how successful the operation and rehabilitation was in bringing bas the proper functioning of the foot and if the quality of life after the operation considerably improved. Material and method. The research was conducted in the orthopedic ward and in Orthopedic Clinic where I carried out a survey in which 45 female patients participated. The age if the group was between 40 and 50. Results and conclusions. The results of the research allowed me to draw the following conclusions. The patients had sufficient knowledge of a bunion and the methods of treating that disease using both operative and non-operative methods. They acquired their knowledge mostly from the doctor (67%) but also from the nurse, from the Internet and from various medical magazines. They were aware of the fact that wearing high-heeled, pointed footwear and lack of hygiene at work had a dramatic effect on quick deterioration of their condition. The proper functioning of the foot was brought back after the operation and rehabilitation. In particular the pain was eliminated in 56% of the cases and the cosmetic appearance was brought back in 44% which is very important for women. The rehabilitation was started on the first day after the surgery in 44% of the women questioned. The quality of life improved in 96% of cases.
