Piel Pol. 2018;1(67):35–43. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.20883/pielpol.2018.4 Aim. To assess how school nurses implement group fluoride prophylaxis by means of supervised group tooth brushing using topical-fluoride caries preventive agents.
Material and methods. 115 nurses were surveyed by means of an authored questionnaire on group fluoride prophylaxis treatment regarding: organization and implementation, products and equipment, the nurses’ attitude and their participation in training.
Results. All the nurses implemented group fluoride prophylaxis, 96.5% implemented the procedure in all school grades, including 84.4% of the schoolchildren. In accordance with the guidelines, the treatment was implemented: 6 times a year (98. 2%), every six weeks (86.1%), in groups up to 15 pupils (56.5%), using Elmex gel (48.7%), Fluormex fluid (40.0%) and disposable tooth brushes (58.3%). Most of the nurses (79.1%) had a positive attitude to the procedure. Under every fourth respondent completed a relevant course, while most (71.3%) were interested in professional development.
Conclusions. Implementing group fluoride prophylaxis which follows the guidelines is the important element of caries prevention. There is a need for developing relevant professional development and doing similar studies regarding other regions of the country.
