Introduction. Hypertension and its devastating effect leading to many systemic complications have been an important medical and social problem for a long time. The chronic character of hypertension leads to the impaired physical fitness and high mortality. Aim. The main goal of the study was to analyze the reasons for high blood pressure and therapeutic management among patients who reported for the above reason to the hospital emergency department. Based on the collected data, the demographic structure of the subjects in terms of age and gender was determined, as well as modifiable and non-modifiable factors of risk factors predisposing to the occurrence of hypertension. Material and methods. The study group consisted of 300 patients admitted to the Hospital Emergency Department of the Regional Hospital of J. Sniadecki ZOZ. in Bialystok with the diagnosis of hypertension. The analysis of dealing with study patients was made according to the medical documentation from the hospital computer system database. Results. The highest number of patients admitted to the Hospital Emergency Department due to high blood pressure was transferred to the internal medicine departments – 148 persons (49.33%) and to the cardiological department – 72 patients (24%). 19% were released. Conclusions. The largest group among the surveyed population were people between 51 and 60 years of age – 60 people (56%). Among the risk factors in patients with primary hypertension, excessive body mass, nicotinism and alcohol abuse were most common.
