The Circumvallate Placenta is a rare pathology of the human placenta that occurs in 1-2% of pregnancies. It is a clinically significant obstetric case. The aetiology of the development of the Circumvallate Placenta is not fully understood, and there are several theories as to the causes of its occurrence. It characterizes extrachorial placental development, resulting in a ring formation along the edges of the placenta, which leads to its efficiency impairment. As a consequence, it causes intrauterine fetal hypotrophy. Pregnancies with placental pathology are classified as high-risk, requiring intensive monitoring of maternal and fetal care by the highest reference clinical centre. Caring for a woman during pregnancy and delivery with placental pathology is a challenge for the healthcare professional, with a particular focus on the role of midwifery care. The midwife early detects disturbing symptoms that may indicate a deterioration of the health condition of the fetus and assess the general and obstetric situation of the mother, which may suggest that both patients' lives are at risk. This study aims to present the extraordinary pathology of the placenta in the course of pregnancy, delivery, postpartum and the consequences for the developing fetus based on the available literature, and make a point of the role of the midwife.
