Introduction. A cataract is an eye disease causing eye lens turbidity, which appears through gradual deterioration in vision quality. A cataract is an affliction touching mostly older people. Next to age, there are such factors as UV radiation, ionizing radiation, smoking tobacco or diabetes among risk factors of cataract occurring. The main symptom of cataract is a gradual and progressive decrease in visual acuity. The only cure is turbid eye lens surgical removal. Aim. The study aims to show nursing problems and identify care problems of a patient with cataract disease, including a preoperative and post-operative period. Case study. A 71-year-old man with right eye immature cataract placed in the ophthalmic ward with the aim of surgical method of phacoemulsification treatment. Information about the patient was sourced through an interview with the patient and his family, physical examination, observation and medical records analysis. Care problems mentioned in the thesis involve mental sphere, knowledge and self-care deficit and prevention from post-operative complication. Conclusions. The patient’s care problems with cataract are related to the disease itself and planned cataract removing surgery. Nursing care of the patient with cataract, both before and after cataract removing surgery should be complex and provide for action in all spheres: biological, psychical and social. Patient directed to cataract removal procedures should feel safe and receive all the information about the disease entity and its treatment. Both patients and his family education about post-operative behaviour are essential.
