Fraza do cytowania: Bojakowska U, Kalinowski P, Estera Kowalska M Assessment of the effectiveness of population-based Breast cancer screening program among women in Poland. Piel Pol. 2013;1(47):18–22. Introduction. Breast cancer ranks first and is the second leading
cause of cancer deaths in Polish females. It turns out that
prevention is the only way we can use to effectively reduce
breast cancer mortality.
Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of
population-based breast cancer screening program among
women in Poland.
Material and methods. The material used for the analyzes was
data on population-based breast cancer screening program for
women aged 50–69 in Poland on the basis of the report from
Digital Prophylactics Monitoring System. The analysis included
the years 2007–2012.
Results. In 2007, the attendance rate was 28.35% of all
women. Based on 2008 report we observed an increase in the
percentage of attendance in population-based breast cancer
screening program to the level of 35.16%. In 2009, the percent
of attendance of the population turned out to be lower than in
the previous year and amounted to 33.68%. The following year,
there was nearly a 4% increase Based on the data from the
2012 report we may suspect a further increase in the interest in
the program.
Conclusions. In spite of increasing interest in population-based
breast cancer screening program in Polish population, the
attendance rate is still insufficient to effectively reduce breast
cancer mortality.
Key words: breast cancer, screening, mammography, preventive program.
