Introduction. In recent years, there have been a number of processes and initiatives aimed at improving the life situation of addicts. However, in order to be successful in this matter, it is necessary to know the existing attitudes of addicts towards the problem affecting them. Aim. The aim of the study was to try to answer the question of how addicted people perceive stimulants. Material and methods. The research was carried out using the diagnostic survey method. An anonymous questionnaire was conducted among patients of psychiatric and addiction treatment wards in the Provincial Hospital for Nervous and Mental Patients in Gniezno. The voluntary survey was conducted among 104 people from July 5, 2022 to September 20, 2022. Results. The vast majority of respondents correctly perceived their addiction as a mental illness or mental disorder (45.2%). There is a certain relationship between age and people who perceive themselves as being addicted (p = 0.0109). In this case, it was definitely easier for older patients. Among all the respondents, only 3 people aged 18-25 admitted to having problems with addiction. The largest group of people admitting to the problem were at the age of 36-48. Therefore, 33 people indicated an affirmative answer. Contact with an addict after winning the fight against addiction is a desirable step for most respondents (61.5%) because it has a motivating effect. Therefore, there is a great interest in participation in recovery meetings or addiction support groups. The vast majority of respondents showed (63.5%) their willingness to participate in such groups. The most respondents were able to function soberly in life. Only 12 (11.5%) people reported problems with being sober. Conclusions. Addicts are aware of the dangers of addiction and its harmful consequences. They can perfectly identify an addicted person by assigning them a given problem. They see difficulties in life and are very willing to use various forms of help. There are many ways to support their recovery and addicts are able to make use of them.
