Fraza do cytowania: Posłuszna M The educational role of nurses in patients with glaucoma. Piel Pol. 2014;3(53):234–238.

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, which causes its progressive atrophy and with time leads to the total and irreversible loss of vision. It is an exceptionally insidious disease as it is revealed fully only when a significant eyesight damage is observed. In most cases it proceeds almost asymptomatically. For this reason this illness is often downplayed. The aim of this work is to show the nurse’s role in the education of patients with glaucoma. The education of patients with glaucoma is to deepen their knowledge about glaucoma, stimulate the patients’ awareness and inspire behaviors, which allow to maintain a good quality of life. To prepare the patient for self-care imposes an obligation on the nurse to teach the patient certain behaviors and procedures. Patients, as well as the family, demonstrate severe deficiencies of knowledge concerning the illness, its treatment and prevention of recurrence. A significant role in the treatment of glaucoma is played by a nurse who may support the therapeutic process. She develops a plan of care for the patient based on the nursing care process – an approach to nursing that has brought good effects and is characterized by professionalism of nursing activities.

Key words: glaucoma, education, nurse, self-care.
