Warsaw Medical University students’ knowledge about osteoporosis

Introduction. In the modern world osteoporosis is not treated as a natural element of the ageing but as complicated disease, which is connected to nearly every health aspects. Aim. The aim of this work was to evaluate a level of Warsaw Medical University Students’ knowledge about the osteoporosis and to compare the level of that knowledge between the students form the nursing and public health faculties. Material and methods. There was 100 students in the respondents group all from the Warsaw Medical University (50 from nursing faculty and 50 from the public health faculty). The research applied an author’s own questionnaire which consisted of 23 closed questions. To calculate a difference important statistically between the students of nursing and public health, a method of U Mann-Whitney’s test was used. Results. The respondents were mostly represented by women (86 female students and 14 male). An analysis of the research results showed average percentage of correct answers from students of public health faculty was 40.73% and for nursing students was 54.67%. The difference important statistically noted was (p = 0.000) between the knowledge level of students form public health faculty and the knowledge level of nursing students, to the advantage of nursing students. Conclusions. Warsaw Medical University students’ level of knowledge about the osteoporosis reached the level of satisfactory grade. The percentage of correct answers in the respondents group from nursing faculty reached higher values than in the respondents group from the public health faculty.
