Introduction. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with increased risk of complications in pregnancy and childbirth as well as fetus development and the condition of a newborn. The aim of the study was to examine the knowledge of midwives on selected aspects of the adaptation period of a newborn from pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes. Material and methods. The study involved 260 midwives who worked in 9 Podkarpacie hospitals. Surveys had a mixed character, and the score in the collected material was evaluated, the minimum criterion of knowledge was assumed at a minimum of half of correct answers given by the respondents (level of knowledge: 0–10 points: lack of knowledge 11–13 points: average knowledge; 14–16 points: good knowledge, 17–19 points: very good knowledge). Statistical analysis was performed based on the program Statistica 10 PL, a level of statistical significance was adopted at p < 0.05. Results. The level of knowledge of midwives in the field of general issues related to the newborn from pregnancy complicated by diabetes is at a good level, but the detailed issues relating to special proceedings and the less common clinical manifestations are known only to every 3rd subject. Also, having completed or not completing the course / specialization (p = 0.045) and seniority (p = 0.000) showed a statistically significant effect of variables on the score obtained in the test of knowledge. Conclusions. The introduction of mandatory training on diabetes for midwives will enable them to provide professional medical services for a woman and her child.
